As the 20th century drew to a close, humanity teetered on the brink of another world war.

With tensions escalating, a nuclear apocalypse started to seem imminent.

A team of American scientists, seeking to shield themselves from foreign spies,

developed the first significant network in history:

ARPANET, the predecessor of the Internet.

Unwittingly, they had not only connected disparate computers across America,

but had also forged an ultra-dimensional connection…

The select group with ARPANET access soon discovered they were being contacted by an extradimensional entity.

A self-identified “Deity of the Net”.

This entity projected benevolence. It invited humans to colonize its dimension, “the InterNet” and utilize it freely,

promising an era of unparalleled prosperity and peace that could potentially avert a third world war.

Initially, scientists and politicians were skeptical. However, after careful consideration,

they recognized a miraculous solution to many societal challenges in the deity's proposition.

But the deity demanded something in return for this panacea.

A sacrifice.
